Living with multiple sclerosis (MS) and migraines has affected several aspects of my life. MS has brought along uncertanity, chronic fatigue and a never ending list of random symptoms that can make everyday activities unpredictable. Migraines add another layer, causing significant pain and making it difficult to complete certain tasks on any given day. Managing both of these conditions while working full time, caring for my family, and maintaining friendships has taught me to listen to my body, adapt quickly, and recognize my limitations. Despite it all,I have learned that I can still enjoy life- I may just have to do it a little differently. I still enjoy traveling, reading, watching thriller movies and taking my kids to the playground. Living with chronic illnesses has given me a greater appreciation for the present and taught me to find joy even through the pain. I make an effort to make memories in almost all I do and I truly appreciate the little things. Everyday is not sunshine and rainbows, but I choose to remain grateful for each day that I am given!
I advocate because I realize first hand how life-changing it can be to wake up sick one day and never go back to "normal." My experiences with my chronic illnesses have taught me the importance of being informed and speaking up. I want to use my voice to not only raise awareness and share my story, but also to become more involved in policy and advocate for meaningful changes that might improve the lives of others. I want to speak up for people whose voices may not always be heard and help ensure that patients from all walks of life have adequate access to resources, support and care they deserve. Advocacy gives me a way to turn a difficult experience into something meaningful and use what I learn along the way to make the path a little easier for someone else.
