Chronic Condition: Ulcerative Colitis
Since being diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis (UC) just prior to matriculating at Princeton University in 2015, UC has transformed from my greatest challenge into my greatest source of strength, forging deep empathy for the quieter struggles we so often shoulder.
The physical reality of UC can be harsh and unpredictable. Throughout my doctorate at Harvard and undergraduate studies, I have endured over twenty hospitalizations, steroid treatments, and multiple failed infusion therapies. Each flare-up brings intense pain and extreme fatigue that may last for weeks or months. The unpredictability of symptoms often demands creativity in balancing professional and personal commitments.
My commitment to disability inclusivity extends to my research and teaching. I developed "Harnessing Employee Talent: The Diversity Advantage," a course that examines how diversity—including disability diversity—enhances organizational culture and performance. My course provides executives and organizational leaders with frameworks to foster inclusive environments. My aim is to shine a light on a too-often-overlooked reality, which is that with the increasing demographic of disabled Americans (10% increase from 2019 to 2023), there is a clear necessity for fundamental transformation in how organizations address disability talent management.
My ultimate goal is to support systemic policy reformation that empowers those living with chronic illnesses and disabilities. Collectively, we can push closer to a world where everyone, regardless of health status, is able to pursue their aspirations without limitation.
