Diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, Migraine, Fibromyalgia, Adenomyosis, Endometriosis, and more, I have traversed the waters of chronic illness for a decade now. Following a motor vehicle accident when I was in high school, the subsequent result was the distinguishing burning pain that accompanies CRPS. From there, I worked hard to seize a 72-74% chance that symptoms would improve within 5 years following an intensive day-hospital program. And it did. Allowing me an opportunity to flourish throughout college until the pandemic brought the onset of something I had never heard of -- adenomyosis.
Quickly, things began to deteriorate from there, and before I knew it, I'd had 2 surgeries to remove endometriosis lesions within 15 months. However, by the grace of God, I am still here. I would have never anticipated the medical road that was to come from that moment. Still, it has brought me to where I am today -- an advocate and dedicated friend to so many who have, are, or may go through the same or similar conditions I have.
I advocate for those who cannot -- whether that is due to sheer inability or untapped confidence. Advocacy is not for the weak and it is not something that should be taken lightly because, like everything else, there is plenty of adversity and difficulty in this work. But like I often say about the outreach work I do with my community service organization, Bosses Give Back, this advocacy work is heart work. I enjoy all that comes with making new connections, learning about mine and other conditions, and of course, sharing my story in hopes that I empower another person to seek proper care.
