The Chronic Disease Coalition is proud to announce a partnership with the Diabetes Policy Collaborative, a group dedicated to ensuring diabetes patients receive the individualized and appropriate treatment necessary to combat their disease.
More than 30.3 million Americans, nearly 10% of the population, suffer from diabetes – a disease in which the body’s capacity to respond and produce insulin is impaired. If ignored, diabetes can result in life-threatening metabolic emergencies, limb amputation, vision loss, or heart and kidney damage.
In 2012, the With diabetes rates continuing to increase, along with the necessary health care costs follow, insurers are looking for ways to cut costs associated with diabetes, specifically through non-medical switching.
Non-medical switching is a term that describes one of many situations where insurance companies put profits before people. Without considering the patient’s health, insurance companies switch patients onto medications that cost less for the provider, despite doctor’s recommendations. Oftentimes, patients will have negative reactions upon switching to these insurance-approved medications.
The Diabetes Policy Collaborative recently released a video further explaining the consequences of non-medical switching. The helpful video simply and accurately describes what many patients experience if insurance companies force patients to change their medical routine.
The Chronic Disease Coalition is committed to ensuring that patient’s rights are protected against insurers, and they have access to the best treatment options to manage their diseases.
