As we wrap up Chronic Disease Month, the Chronic Disease Coalition is taking a moment to thank the hundreds of patient advocates across the country that contacted their elected officials in recent weeks. If you haven’t yet taken action, it’s never too late!
Our goal was to raise awareness about the high cost of chronic disease, and we did it with resounding success. This year's theme, "Don’t Fight Alone," highlighted the importance of unity and support for individuals living with chronic conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, multiple sclerosis, and cancer.
Recent CDC data revealed that nearly half of Americans, including children, live with at least one chronic disease. This means that half of every elected official’s constituents — thousands of people and their families — are navigating a healthcare system that often falls short. Despite existing state and federal protections, nearly 30 million Americans have experienced workplace discrimination due to their medical needs.
Moreover, about a quarter of chronic disease patients felt they were not receiving the medical care needed for a healthy, productive life. Additionally, nearly 1 in 5 chronic disease patients reported facing obstacles to voting due to their conditions.
While raising awareness through letters was a significant step, the need for ongoing advocacy is clear. We will continue to call on policymakers to address these challenges by taking concrete actions:
- Evaluate the Impact of Policies: As policymakers, understanding how legislation affects those with chronic diseases is crucial. Policies must consider the real-world impact on patient access to treatments and healthcare costs.
- Engage with Patients: Consulting with patients and advocacy groups like the Chronic Disease Coalition ensures that policy decisions are informed by those directly affected.
- Connect with Communities: During legislative breaks, take the time to meet with chronic disease patients in your area. Listening to their stories can provide valuable insights and promote meaningful healthcare reform.
The Chronic Disease Coalition remains committed to advocating for the rights and well-being of chronic disease patients. By working together, we can ensure that healthcare policies prioritize patient needs and improve the quality of life for millions of Americans.
Let's continue to make a difference, ensuring that no one fights alone in their journey with chronic disease. Check back at our action center throughout the year for opportunities to make your voice heard easily.
